Overclock e8500 on 1333FSB motherboard
I intend to boost my e8500 on gigabyte ga-73vm-s2. I can only adjust the CPU by changing the FSB speed, for example from 333 to 370mhz. That would give a multiplier of about 3.5ghz, but the actual FSB is 1480mhz and my motherboard only supports 1333mhz. Will this damage the card or can I push the motherboard a bit? Is there software to check the motherboard after overclocking? I have two 2gb pc2-6400 RAMs.
With an E7500 operating at 1333 fsb you'll achieve 3.6GHz. Increasing the voltage results in an E7600 delivering 3.8GHz at the same frequency. These processors are priced around $6 each.
I wouldn't be concerned about the FSB limit on the mobo. If it lets you adjust, go ahead. I used my E8400 at 400MHz/1600MHz FSB to achieve 3.6GHz. The worst case would be damaging a CPU, mobo, and RAM that could be upgraded for $130 with much better performance.
The overclocked two-core configuration will consume around 90 watts, while the four-core setup begins at 95 watts and the faster xeons reach 120 watts. This increased load may put pressure on the MB VRM. The E5450 model draws 80 watts, and there are also 65-watt Quads Q9550S and Q9505S units that provide extra thermal margin. Not every chipset supports swapping to xeon models. There are numerous choices available, and each will offer valuable insights.
