whenever i try to overclock my cpu even slightly, it crashes. could this be related to using the stock cooler? should i switch to water cooling or a better cooler for improved stability?

It seems like there might be some confusion about voltage matters. However, it's important to avoid using the stock cooler for overclocking at all. Nada, zilch.
What are your system specifications? You might manage with air cooling unless you're running a very power-hungry chip.
