Think about doing everything just to annoy people. If you're running older titles, the slower clock speed might actually help, but newer games will take advantage of multiple threads. As long as things stay stable, using 8 to 12 threads should be smooth, so definitely go for the 3900x.

This applies mainly to workloads that make use of multiple cores. My system has a 3900x architecture, yet some programs don’t fully engage all cores. This isn’t a CPU issue and may improve with future designs, but general claims can be misleading. That’s the core of your concern. Avoid relying on user benchmarks.
Focus on upgrading your GPU over your CPU if you play mostly games. Opting for a mid-range GPU paired with a high-end CPU is not recommended. A 3700x with an RTX 2060 or 2070 would be a solid choice.
