I'm torn between a 9900k and a 3900X for my gaming rig. My ASUS PG27UQ 4K works well at 98-144Hz, and I own a 2080Ti for 4K gaming. Would the performance difference be noticeable? Do you think the extra 4 cores would matter for 4K games in five years? For pure 4K, what are the pros and cons of each option? Also, I'm planning to play mostly CoD Warzone—any benchmarks comparing 4K vs 3900X?

For gaming focus, 9900k is ideal. If other tasks are involved, go with 3900x. You may notice a slight drop in FPS—around 2-5%—but the 3900x should still outperform the 9900k later on.

i9 9900k will run smoother at 0-2fps in 4K, while 3900x offers better performance. Ideal for the future with PCIe 4.0 support, 4 Moore cores, and 8 additional threads for better workloads and scalability. Uses less power and heats up less than the 9900k.

The 9900k offers a slight edge in gaming performance across most titles. Choose it if you need about 2-3 extra frames per second. Opt for the 3900X when focusing on tasks other than gaming, video editing, photo work, or multitasking during gameplay.

I pay close attention to maintaining around 2-3 frames per second and understand the 9900k offers better performance for gaming. However, my main worry is... I don’t intend to upgrade my motherboard and CPU for about five years from now. I tend to purchase high-end components and aim for a PC lifespan of 5 to 6 years before replacing or upgrading. I’m aware I’m essentially asking you to guess what the future holds, but... five years down the line, do you think the 9900k with a socket of 1150 will still perform well for gaming? Or do you believe the AM4 socket will become more advantageous in five years? It’s likely an answer that’s hard to predict. What are your opinions?

Perhaps it's better to focus on 1080p benchmarks using a powerful GPU to determine the CPU's limits. The CPU isn't influenced by resolution, so the 3900X consistently exceeds 144hz and becomes the constraint when it hits its CPU output ceiling. Since this same threshold applies at 4K, the monitor becomes the bottleneck in that case, as it can't display anything faster than 144hz. The lower FPS at 4K is mainly due to the GPU being overworked, whereas a stronger GPU would allow you to reach the same frame rate as at 1080p.
