Other options for BFV? (similar to BF2 gameplay)
Hi,
I’ve been back into gaming after a few years off (BF3 was the last one I played). Being new, I thought BF2 would have improved in both graphics and gameplay (should’ve looked deeper, haha).
Of course, I’m let down to say so, and now I’m searching for alternatives:
A) Prefer settings from WWII or the present day (no interest in WW1, ancient times, or futuristic themes)
B) Gameplay similar to BF2; no endless running without catching a breath, no fast-paced COD style (BF5 seems updated in that way)
C) Good online options with separate beginner servers
D) A pace that lets for some strategy
Looks like I’m hoping for a modernized version of BF2, wouldn’t mind the old BF2 graphics if online play is enjoyable or possible.
Any suggestions would be great!
This might not be your cup of tea, but have you heard about Squad? It offers a unique twist compared to what you're looking for, yet it's an excellent military simulation game that demands strong strategic thinking and effective communication. It features highly realistic sound effects and mechanics, including the reload system.
Here’s a revised version of your text:
You're a bit cautious about adding more coins at the BF5 creators, though. How does running in BF4 feel? Is it similar to BF5 (an Olympic marathon without stopping, making maps look like a swarm of ants sprayed with bullets and meth)? To be more precise, I think my experience with BF5 is about reflexes—little cooperation or strategic planning, just giving advice on enemy positions. It’s there, but it feels pointless given the intense pace (a result of cheetah-style running, lol).
In BF2 you’d plan to stop briefly to catch your breath, then move quickly to a building and climb the roof—within a minute or two the tank would pass by.
In BF5, in just two minutes everyone has respawned 37 times and/or raced around the outer map sections without using a vehicle... (though getting into a vehicle still takes about two minutes).
Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll check some videos of BF4 to see how it feels.
Just checked it on YouTube!
Looks really accurate!!! I'm going to investigate that one, as what I saw might be exactly what I'm searching for!
Thanks a lot!
Well, good luck to you. I think watching more videos would help. It's not exactly a Battlefield experience. Working together and communicating are essential. Unlike certain games, you can't just suddenly start going "Rambo" and build a killstreak without any preparation, especially if you're still getting the hang of it. It's a complex game, but it's still quite engaging, as the most realistic scenario is actually being in the middle of a real conflict. Just remember to check if the game matches what you're looking for before purchasing.
DICE has consistently produced every battlefield title from the start.
It’s tough to meet all your needs, but you should consider PUBG because:
A) It reflects a modern setting
B) Its unique gameplay demands continuous running
C) Many players use the same server, so you’ll need to adapt quickly to the learning curve
D) The pace is slow, giving plenty of time for strategic thinking.
Another option you might like is Escape from Tarkov. Both games excel in their respective genres (in my view).
If you've ever tried the Project Reality mod for Bf2, then Squad feels quite different compared to a newer engine. It was also developed by many of the same people who worked on PR in the past. The mod still supports several active servers at the time I checked a few months ago. You don't have to own a full copy of BF2 anymore; it's all included in the PR installer. Arma 3 is another possibility. It leans more toward cooperative play against bots, though PVP missions are available. The gameplay isn't structured like a typical FPS, and you can customize missions extensively in the editor. This flexibility can be confusing for newcomers since it depends heavily on who designed each mission.
