Visit the App Store and check for the 10.10 release. However, given that 10.11 has been available for some time, question whether the 10.10 update is still accessible.

The app store lets you upgrade to the newest compatible release. Note that all MacBookPro models from 2010 onward are eligible for versions 10.11 (El Capitan) and 10.12 (Sierra).

That's exactly what I considered. I hadn't used a Mac before, so I expected they wouldn't release updates for an older version in the App Store.
