Original setup?
Hello everyone, welcome to my first post—I’m a bit nervous but excited! I’m planning to assemble my very first PC, mainly for SolidWorks CAD and Open-FOAM CFD simulations. I also want to play some games, so I’ve looked into the used market and found a good deal around 160€ for a setup that includes: CPU: Intel i5-6400 MBO, GPU: RX-570 4GB, PSU: CoolerMaster MWE 600W, CPU cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212, RAM: Hyper-X Fury 2x8GB at 3200MHz, SSD: Samsung MSI B365M NVMe M.2. The total comes to about 450€. My worry is that the components might become outdated quickly—especially since the CPU is a 6th generation and the MBO uses LGA 1151. Are these technical issues realistic? Should I go with this configuration now or invest more upfront for a longer-lasting build? Thanks all!
I’d pay the extra for a model like a 3100 and B450 combo, since the 6400 is quite outdated. I own it, but it’s clearly showing signs of wear during rendering in Premiere.
Right now buying a system isn't great as well ryzen refresh, rtx 300 and big navi are launching around the sepetmber window. With ryzen 400 coming in fall. A 5th gen i5 is going to just suck for every single thing you want to do with the system. So my advice is to either wait or see for a used ryzen system with a b450 or x470board is available. New a ryzen 2700 + any msi b450 MAX board would be about 250 and that would just smash that poor i5 in your work tasks and be a lot better gaming cpu. This also will allow you to upgrade to a whole other 2 gens of cpu's in the future if there is need for performance (a msi tomahawk or mortar max are preferable). Also the psu you are looking at is very low quality and should not be used as it is a risk to your system. Here is a psu tier list.Get a 500w or higher unit from the b tier or up.
You've explored various options and found the setup you're considering. Regarding the cooling, stock solutions should work fine unless there are known compatibility issues with your Ryzen 3000 series. The B450M is generally reliable, but double-check the latest reviews for any updates.
New or recently made devices usually work well. If it comes with older BIOS, just ask a computer shop to update it. Every B450 board with the "Ryzen 3000 ready" sticker means it’s guaranteed to ship with the latest BIOS. If you wait, save up and consider newer models like Zen 3, Ampere, Big Navi. If prices were too high, older models will become more affordable.
