I have a Dell XPS M1710 with a GPU that functions only with XP and a subwoofer that works with Vista. I need to dualboot both operating systems. I set up separate partitions on the 240GB HDD—80GB for XP and 160GB for Vista—and installed each OS there. Unfortunately, I can only boot into the OS that was installed last, not choose between them. The system displays the most recently installed OS, regardless of which one I want to use. I tried installing both again, but the issue persists. I’m unsure what’s causing this. Do I need an additional partition to store the bootloader for switching between the systems? I thought two OSes were sufficient, but maybe I’m misunderstanding something. Should I reformat the disk and leave a small free space? (This is similar to the System Reserved partition size on my Windows 10 machine.) Thanks!

Generally, a more effective method is preferred.

Interestingly, the instructions suggest following my current approach, yet I plan to allocate additional room on the storage device.

Determined. Ensure at least 50mb of unpartitioned space remains on the disk during Vista installation, otherwise the installer won’t have room for the bootloader. Start with XP, then create a new partition with less than 50mb of free space beyond that. Keep the rest untouched; the "Select which OS" screen will handle the bootloader placement automatically. This seems to work when booting from DVDs, but with two flash drives it appears Vista attempted to place the bootloader on the internal drive due to insufficient space.
