Software professional seeking guidance from the hardware experts. Your assistance was invaluable when assembling my desktop previously. Thank you all greatly!
I currently manage web development on a local VM using VirtualBox or Homestead. I’m running Linux instead of Mac or Windows, aiming to maintain consistency across my primary Linux desktop and secondary laptop.
Important priorities (in this order):
- Web development: stable and efficient operation
- Durability: long-lasting setup including battery charging capability
- Usability: comfortable screen size and resolution
OS preference: Linux, not macOS; I’m switching from Windows 10 presumably.
CPU: AMD Ryzen recommended
RAM: Amount uncertain, but sufficient for virtualization is essential.

Budget considerations:
$600–800 range, not my main machine; $1000 if the project offers significant value.
Not specified further.

Laptop specifications:
- Size: Larger screen is better for comfort, preferably thinner.
- Resolution: 1080p preferred.
Portability: I need a portable device, not a full desktop replacement.
Gameplay: No requirement to play games; only general use.

Operating system: Linux, excluding Mac. Swapping from Windows 10 seems likely.
CPU: AMD Ryzen
RAM: Unknown, but adequate for virtual machines is necessary.

Storage needs:
512GB SSD preferred.
Battery life: At least 10 hours, ideally more.
Additional tasks: Minimal; no graphic design or video editing required, but flexibility appreciated.

Preferred brands:
- Favorable: Acer Swift 3 (but avoid fingerprint readers).
- Dislike: Unspecified, but consistency with desktop is key.
AMD Ryzen is the top choice.
Other details: No specific sites mentioned; no need for optical drives such as DVD ROM or Blu-ray writers.

Country of residence: USA
Extra info: Please share any links to preferred retailers if applicable.
Thank you once again for your patience and support. I’ll keep an eye on this discussion. Best regards.

Currently, optical drives increase the laptop's height and are rarely used, which is why they’re excluded from many concurrent gen laptops. From this list, I’d consider the Lenovo option, though the screen size wasn’t mentioned. A bigger screen would add weight and reduce portability. It would also cost more without significant improvements in components or specs. I checked Newegg, but better deals might be available on other platforms, so we’re asking for the preferred purchase site and to consider where you feel most comfortable buying.

Ended up choosing this option on sale for $550 (sale ends today)
https://www.newegg.com/Pure-Silver-...st...6834316931
Only managed to get 256GB SSD and 8GB LPDDR4 RAM, but I couldn't justify spending another $100 for an upgrade. It offers solid battery life of over 10 hours, as I heard. I believe it fits my requirements right now.
Thanks for the assistance, really appreciated. I was surprised by Newegg's filtering system.
P.S. No best answer or solved tag tag appears for a reason I don't understand.
