Hi, I wanted to share my experience about preordering an AMD Ryzen 9 5950X preorder at BHPHOTO. Comments are welcomed if you want to know more. I placed my order at around 8:30 am EST on Nov 5th. I thought it was just like Nvidia RTX 3000s launch where new products were released at 9 am, so I felt pretty good about myself. Then I digged into the the Q&A page and realized it actually went live on 12am, and the preorder was taken away at 9:30 am. Obviously my order stays at nearly the bottom of the pile. Today I got an email from BHPHOTO saying they would not be able to fulfill my order until Q1 2021. Is there anyone here who also preordered at BHPHOTO? I have never had a DIY PC before. I used 2013 MacBook Pro for 4 years, then switched to 2017 MacBook Pro. It was a total disarster. I changed the display twice because it gradually developed an area with blue tint. I also replaced the keyboard twice because the doomed butterfly keyboard. And even worse I changed the battary 3 times due to swelling issues. This year I have been working from home on it and I realized it is way too loud, hot and slow than I could stand any longer. So I decided to build my own PC. Luckily this is a good year to do so haha. I just placed an order for Nvidia RTX 3090 FE on BestBuy today miraculously out of sheer luck. All components except the CPU would arrive this Friday yay. But the CPU situation is really depressing right now. I am even thinking about getting a Ryzen 9 3900X and sell it when my 5950X finally ships. Thanks for reading, I will post an update when I get to actually build my PC.

Your 3090 will be available for collection next Friday, as BestBuy mentioned. A fresh iPhone and a new computer can be picked up together!

There are some solid offers available on the 3900x right now. If you need to start quickly, I’d suggest this path. Once the 5950x becomes available, you can look into the used market to see if anyone is upgrading to a 5000 and selling a 3000 series at a lower price. Also, I’m not sure about your daily routine, but if it’s a temporary processor, you could easily find something affordable like a 3600 for now—since it will only be needed for a few months. Selling it later will be much simpler than with a more expensive chip.

I placed the order late night, received identical or similar messages. Delivery is expected between January and March, with updates in early December. Likely they’re planning to ship sooner after all the canceled orders, especially since they mentioned possible shipping in March. I’ll wait because I upgraded from Zen+ CPU to x570. (I’m moving to B450 when the new CPU arrives as a secondary machine.) The 5950x would easily surpass even the latest MacBook models, let alone a 3900x. Switching from the top of line 2017 laptops to this setup should bring a huge performance boost.

I searched for 3600x but it didn’t meet my expectations. I’m a data scientist with an i7-8700 desktop, which wasn’t fast enough. The 3900X was my next choice. The problem worsened when I used remote access from my Mac, requiring two external monitors and constant fan noise throughout the day. I really dislike this MacBook Pro generation. Additionally, my photography work suffers under its performance limits, often dropping to 2GHz and overheating at around 99°C.

Wow, the availability is super tight. I guess I might be one of the few left who wasn’t left out. Used to be a loyal Mac user from my first Macbook, haha. This generation feels really let down. It can’t even run Diablo III smoothly without stuttering or dropping frames. I just bought a 3900X on Newegg and am planning to assemble my PC this Friday—goal achieved!

It seems you're asking about how your role relates to a target of around 3900, and you want to clarify that idea. That makes sense.

I placed an order for a 5800X five minutes before it was ready... They told me the latest delivery is December 21st.

I'm really happy I took the 3900X route. Maybe I'll finally get my Mac working if I don't have to wait another year.
