Optimized speed control using PWM or constant settings.
Hello All, So recently decided to move from AIR cooling to an AIO (Liquid Freezer 3 Pro) and I'm going nuts as there seems to be conflicting information. I was originally running it on a PWM curve, however just switched it to a 80% constant speed and this is where I seem to get my best results (39.2 on tctrl t-die at idle, 27.6 on CCD T-die at Idle, 79.6 on tctrl t-die under load, 81.2 on CCD t-die under load (Cinebench 24) What would be best for the pump? A constant speed, or PWM control? I would assume constant speed but an Artic Rep seems to think PWM. (9800X3D btw) I was under the impression if you ran the pump via PWM that the constant changing of speed would put stress on the pump. Please be gentle with me, this is my first ever AIO
I've also believed a steady pace works best for the pump and is something I support. The Liquid Freezer 3 Pro includes a six-year warranty, which gives me confidence about its durability. However, I've used three AIOs and consistently ran them at a fixed pump speed of 75%. Similarly, most cars with stock engines that have the longest mileage tend to be those driven long distances on highways at steady speeds, resulting in minimal wear rather than city driving.
I had my idea clear before purchasing it, but then the Artic rep seemed to throw a spanner in my thinking. Of course, the rep isn't the one who designed it—lol. I think I’ll keep the speed steady. Thanks for your advice; I’ll try 75% or maybe 70% and see how it goes. Even at 80%, I can barely hear it, so it probably won’t be a big deal.
For pumps, experts generally advise either maintaining a steady speed near 100% or using a fixed PWM level to prevent frequent adjustments. This approach minimizes wear. Arctic’s recommendations often focus on PWM since their designs accommodate it, though most users simply set a consistent speed and let fans manage cooling dynamically. Temperatures during idle and load remain acceptable for a 9800X3D at 80% constant speed without noise problems, making it safe. To align with Arctic’s guidance, you can stick to PWM with a flat curve, ensuring stability. In short, steady speed or a consistent PWM profile is ideal; avoid sudden changes.
