It varies based on your budget and existing equipment, but even with a functional CPU, I’d consider moving away from this setup.

For a 6600K user switching to a 2700X, there were no single cores lost and about three times more multi-core performance.

The top CPU for your system is the i7 7700K, while the Z170 and Z270 are largely outdated. Consider upgrading your motherboard and CPU for better performance.

Since he has the means, why not switch platforms? The board is already gone, so an upgrade would be better done elsewhere.

If it functions at all, its worth on the used market is comparable to or higher than a model that does better. I’d recommend anyone with a z170 or z270 and an i5 or i7 processor upgrade immediately. They could move to a Ryzen 1600AF paired with a b450 motherboard and achieve break-even or even profit. It’s also possible to get a Ryzen 3600 and only lose a few dollars for overall improved performance.

Based on your idea, if the processor functions well, you might want to consider selling it and then moving to an AMD build. From a young age, I was only familiar with Intel, so changing to AMD wouldn’t be straightforward for me. It feels quite tied to Intel.

It's odd how affordable AMD options can be while still delivering strong performance. Comparing them to older Intel chips, which are pricier but lag behind, really highlights the difference.
