It doesn't really matter unless you're aiming to play extremely old games, in which case you'll need version 7.

Windows 8.1 has performed well in my experience. If you're seeking an OS that might seem a bit flawed yet remains supported for a long time, 8.1 is a solid choice. I've encountered fewer issues with Windows 8.1 compared to Windows 7, though my older 7-era PC was quite basic.
