Hello, community II. I was considering upgrading my CPU to a Ryzen 7 3800X since I frequently do video editing and rendering, in addition to my regular tasks. I assisted my friend in setting up an editing PC with a 3800X, which performs exceptionally well. I own an ASRock B450M Steel Legend mATX motherboard (with the latest BIOS) and was wondering if anyone could advise whether it’s best to use this board with my current MB or invest more in an X470 MB. I’ve looked online and seem to be fine for basic everyday use. I might limit certain features, but performance should still be adequate now. Should I stick with my MB or save some money for a future upgrade to an X470? If there are no major restrictions on CPU performance, I can upgrade the MB later. Also, I’m currently using Gammaxx 400 for cooling my Ryzen 7 1700, but overclocking at 1700 was challenging. The MB appears to have some issues when trying to overclock memory in slots 1 and 3 (as noted in the manual). Will my Gammaxx 400 be capable of handling the 3800X? Is my MB sufficient so I can continue with just a CPU upgrade for now?

In a week, AMD will release the 5000 series. I’ll hold off until then before purchasing the 3800x. If you prefer not to wait, you can stick with your existing motherboard and cooler. Regarding RAM, it should be installed in slots 2 and 4, not 1 and 3.

X470 is no longer relevant, B450 remains solid. B550 exists mainly to ensure compatibility with Zen 3. Your motherboard is still fine, and the main differences between B450 and X470 are likely I/O ports and PCIe lanes—generally not a big concern. The X470 typically offers better VRM for overclocking, though your CPU cooler might be the real constraint. Spend wisely, stick with your B450 board.

Variations exist in placement, but typically slots 2 and 4 are preferred over 1 and 3, though this isn't consistent for every four-slot mobile game.

Thanks for the input. I think keeping the model will work. I planned to wait longer for lower prices, but it could take a while because I monitor costs closely and retailers usually need time to adjust their inventory. Regarding your question about 3800x versus 3700x, performance benchmarks don’t show a significant difference, so either choice should be fine.

If you can afford a 3800X, you should easily get a 5800X.

I’m considering 3700x but unsure if it’s the optimal moment yet. I’ll keep reflecting and maybe wait a bit longer.
