Hello everyone! I’m trying to figure out the best approach for my Linux workstation with ZFS, deduplication, and ECC RAM. I’m using Ubuntu/Debian on a Zen 2 overclocked system with ECC RAM, and I’m considering two types of memory: ECC (Samsung DDR4-2666 CL19) or non-ECC (G.Skill RipJaws V DDR4-3600). My main concern is minimizing performance loss, especially since I plan to run CPU updates soon. I have limited experience with this setup, so I’m seeking advice from the community.
I’m currently working on a PhD in Physics related to MRI data processing. Due to the pandemic, I’ve had to adapt and work without full access to university resources. My home machine is a Ryzen 3700X with 2x32GB ECC RAM, which I’m worried might slow things down if I run at less than 1:1 speed. I also need to process large datasets, so I’m thinking about using either ECC or non-ECC memory.
I’ve already consolidated a big dataset from external storage and am planning to use RAIDZ2 with deduplication. Right now I’m using 32GB of non-ECC RAM, but it’s not ideal for heavy scientific work. I’m unsure whether upgrading to ECC would hurt performance or if non-ECC would be better.
I’m also considering using L2ARC and want to know what SSD would work best for this setup. I have two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots and am thinking about Intel Optane Memory H10 with 32GB + 512GB, but I’m not sure if that’s the right fit for my needs.

Are the computations influenced by memory speed? Keep in mind that Infinity fabric can be adjusted manually and desynchronized from memory frequency, boosting performance if you raise it sufficiently (such as increasing to over 266MHz). The relationship lies between UCLK (controller) and memory frequency, not fabric, so maintain a 1:1 ratio—just because the alternative is 1:2.
