The models from MSI featuring Max in the title are motherboards that received a larger BIOS chip and a version that backs 3rd generation. This ensures compatibility with the latest standards regardless of the BIOS release. Many MSI boards also allow Bios Flashback, letting you install a BIOS on a USB drive and connect it via a specific port. Even without the CPU in the socket, the board can read the BIOS from the USB and apply it, without needing the CPU installed. Thus, numerous MSI boards without Max can still receive BIOS updates using a USB stick. Here are some models that clearly indicate support for Bios Flashback (green checkmark throughout): AM4 Vcore VRM Ratings v1.4 (2019-11-07). For a 3600 or better rating, aim for boards showing two green checkmarks in the center. While a single green mark is acceptable for up to eight cores, it’s advisable to choose a more robust board for future upgrades like 10 cores with mild overclocking, without overheating. It’s also important to note that the Ryzen 3rd generation series was introduced around June-July last year. Hence, all recently released boards should support Ryzen 3rd generation BIOSes. Generally, manufacturers don’t keep long-term stock of motherboards, so opt for a model from a reputable retailer or online store that’s likely to be in stock between November and February. Wi-Fi capability is a consideration; you may need to add a separate 10-20$ PCIe Wi-Fi card and install it in the motherboard’s PCIe slot. If Wi-Fi isn’t essential, focus on MSI boards... The B450-A Pro, B450 Gaming Plus, B450 Gaming, B450 Mortar all meet the BIOS Flashback requirement. When it comes to upgrade potential, ensure your board has at least two green checkmarks for future flexibility. Asrock boards from the same era typically support Ryzen 3 processors out of the box, offering ample room for later enhancements. Gigabyte B450 Aorus M has a single green checkmark but includes strong features and was released around the same time as Ryzen, making it a safe choice. The Asrock series B450 models (Steel Legend, Pro4, M) all display two green checkmarks, indicating future upgrade capability. Gigabyte B450 supports Ryzen 3rd gen since May 2019, so unless the board has been sitting on shelves for months, it’s a reliable option. For wireless options, consider reputable brands like TP-Link or Newegg for compatible cards that fit PCIe slots. Pairing these with a USB Wi-Fi adapter can enhance connectivity without built-in Wi-Fi.
