I don’t understand networking well, so I’m at a loss here. I received a Wi-Fi booster from Virgin with a Cat6 cable, but in Windows it shows 1Gbps, yet my speed check on Ookla only gives around 80 Mbps. I’m expecting the speeds to match, so if that’s not the case, anyone can help me figure out what’s wrong and how to get the correct speeds.

Hi! Your home data plan typically uses internal networks for quicker access, while LAN speeds of 1 Gbps allow devices in your house to communicate at that rate. Your outgoing traffic depends on your ISP.

Which wireless protocol are you using? 2.4GHz or 5GHz? 802.11a, b, g, n, ac, or ax? This affects how much data your devices can transfer.

It's possible I'm misunderstanding. My estimates suggest Wifi 4 offers around 25 Mbps and Wifi 5 up to 300 Mbps. That means with an odd number like 80, the limitation might shift elsewhere.

I used ookla on a 5GHz connection and its coverage varied between 250 and 170 depending on the moment. In certain cases, my actual download speeds in apps like Steam could exceed 30+ Mbps.

I think the target speed is 500mbps, which means I won’t receive the full 1gbps. The 80mbps we get is still insufficient.

Sure, clarify your point. With a wired connection, you typically see around 80 Mb/s in a speed test, while Wi-Fi usually delivers about 250 Mb/s. Could you share some screen captures of those results? That would help explain the difference.
