Avoid a full Windows reinstall on your wife's i5 2500. Focus on safe upgrade steps when moving from Intel to AMD. When switching from Intel to Ryzen 2700X, ensure compatibility and check BIOS updates.

You might want to give it a go, though most likely you'll need to reinstall it—particularly if it isn't Windows 10. Keep your existing PC for now and create a fresh system? Just add a power supply and storage, assuming you already have a GPU to keep both running. You can rely on the integrated graphics on the 2500.

It’s best to create a backup and then trust the process. If you can start Windows on the new CPU, I suggest performing a “reset Windows.”

This might be useful for you since licensing can be challenging. I've been researching this topic as I prepare to follow similar steps. Many users say switching from an Intel system to AMD works well with existing Windows 10 setups. Some suggest a complete reinstall, which is generally the safest approach. I'm approaching this with confidence it should succeed, but I'm ready to invest time if needed. I've created a backup of my main drive for testing purposes. While I evaluate the new hardware, I'll use my current Windows installation to confirm functionality before disconnecting my existing system. If possible, have both systems operational for a brief period to prevent any interruptions. Let me know if this assists you.
