I’m having issues with GTA V on all high settings at 4K resolution. The VRAM slider shows 3.1GB, but that’s not possible. I’m seeing 35–65 frames per second. Something is definitely off.
I'll maintain my preferences close to the upper limit and ensure smooth performance at 90 frames per second in 1080p resolution using a single 290x display.
8GB memory, R9 290, i5-4570 processor. Smooth transition from 1440p to 1080p, high/very-high quality, advanced features disabled, no MSAA. Consistent frame rate around 70-80fps. Vsync helps prevent screen tearing and it works well most of the time, only occasionally dropping below 60fps.
The game relies on storing data in memory, which improves performance when more RAM is available. Learning about R.A.G.E.'s advanced memory handling reveals why the game runs so fluidly. I support using software that fully utilizes hardware capabilities—every program should do that. EDIT: recent updates seem to have lowered caching levels; just a couple of weeks ago my system used around 14–15 GB total, now it's about 8–9 GB. Perhaps less caching occurs online, which explains the instant car appearances and occasional sudden drops.
