I plan to upgrade with 32 GB of DDR5 RAM on a Z790 AORUS Elite or Z790 UD AC and an i7 13700K. My budget is near $200, but I’m comfortable with around $150 if the performance meets about 95% of what you’d expect from that price. As a photographer, I’m focused on reliability and longevity—aiming for a build that can last a decade, similar to my previous Gen 3 17 setup. I’m not interested in pushing the RAM beyond its limits; instead, I’ll enable XMP settings to boost it. I might consider undervolting or adjusting power settings later if needed, but right now I want something that supports BIOS optimization. I won’t be overclocking the CPU since the board and processor already handle that well, and extra gains aren’t worth it for someone new to this. RAM specs are confusing for me—different speeds and latency figures make it hard to decide. Photo editing is mainly a single-core task, like 2D image work rather than heavy gaming. I’m certain I need at least 32 GB, which is what I’ve had since 2012. The type of RAM I’m considering is a bit puzzling for me. If faster RAM doesn’t really improve results given the cost, then it’s not a big advantage for my needs. Avoid unnecessary power use—RAM typically consumes up to 5 watts per stick. Reducing voltage won’t make much difference, around 0.1w at most. Saving energy isn’t worth the effort. For the best value, opt for the cheapest 6400 CL32 kit. It should cost around $140 and run efficiently. It’s usually the starting point before performance drops significantly.

Thanks for the feedback—it really means a lot! As a photographer, I’m more focused on getting great shots than diving into tech details. I’ve been learning about the new hardware specs for a month now, but I still didn’t realize NVMe was around. Your PC specs look solid—Z790 Elite and i7 13700K sound great for a photo workflow. I guess I should have stuck with what I had instead of jumping into upgrades. No worries about the GPU, though—I think a simpler rig will do just fine for editing.

Thanks...It's a matter of diminishing returns. I won't spend another $50 more to get an extra 3% performance. Just want to find the price/performance value sweet spot. I used the onboard graphics on my Gen 3 i7 for 6 years but had to get a RX 460 when I added a 2nd 1440p monitor. So I will at least try that initially. I do use some Topaz AI programs for sharpening and noise reduction that benefit from GPU. I'll see what improvement I get from the new CPU onboard graphics first and decide if that boost was sufficient for me. If not I'll get a better discrete GPU...and I also need the DVI-D connection for my older NEC monitor which still runs great.

Use the RX 460 for improved performance over the UHD 770 in the 13700k when paired with the correct drivers. Connect it via a display port or HDMI to DVI adapter for the older monitor. If you require GPU-based DVI, an older GPU might be necessary.

I chose the Ripjaws model instead of the Trident Z5 since I’ll be air-cooling and think they might share the same RAM. The Ripjaws lacks the RGB lighting I don’t need.
