Now that the agreed, non-current mainline Windows editions are addressed, let's move to sub-series releases, beginning with Windows 3.1. Motherboard: [i430TX] Intel YM430TX reference board CPU: [Socket 7] Intel Pentium (P5) at 200 MHz (or 166 MHz) GPU: [PCI] S3 Trio64V2/DX + [PCI] 3dfx Voodoo (the first one) RAM: 64 MB (maximum cacheable memory) Sound card: [ISA16] Creative Labs Sound Blaster AWE32 (not PnP) Storage: 2 GB IDE hard drive This board lacks a built-in network adapter, unlike most contemporary boards, and Windows 3.1 (in its "for Workgroups" version) can actually connect to the internet. Include [PCI] AMD PCnet-FAST III for that functionality. Windows 3.1 doesn’t ship with a driver for this card, but you can locate and install one by searching for "Windows 3.1 in VirtualBox with drivers," as the YouTube tutorials provide the necessary instructions. While potentially superior hardware exists, this setup should satisfy anyone wanting to run Windows 3.1.
