Microsoft Security Essentials is considered the improved successor to Defender, though it doesn’t appear to be available for Windows 10. In my view, staying cautious and using an adblocker can be a solid approach with Defender.

Defender on Windows 8 and beyond evolved from MSE. Prior to that, Defender was considered ineffective and largely useless.

BitDefender is a lightweight, user-friendly solution that performs well without issues. Malwarebytes delivers strong results and feels reliable. Comodo Firewall can be intrusive, often requests permissions, but has never caused problems.
