I recently got my first 1440p monitor and used it for console games. Eventually, I switched back to my PC for gaming and switched to a 240Hz 1080p display. I noticed my performance was significantly lower in MWIII compared to MWII last year, and I hadn’t played PC CoD all year. I checked the in-game benchmark (which hasn’t been reliable for weeks) and saw my 3080 achieving around 180fps versus my 10900k’s over 250 fps. I’m using the same RAM as before—two 8GB 4K modules at 3866MHz, which causes crashes at 4K. Last year’s MWII benchmark was about a 50/50 bottleneck with 250fps. I experimented with different Windows configurations, NVIDIA tweaks, and in-game settings, but nothing really affected the bottleneck or FPS numbers in MWIII. Various games and benchmarks suggest a noticeable drop, yet a 70fps decrease feels quite steep. I dismissed it initially, thinking 180fps would be the best I could get. Recently, I tried to gauge how many frames I’d lose at 1440p by switching monitors. When I changed to my second monitor, I saw more frames—about 20% more. Going back down, the frame rate dropped again. I suspect the second monitor might be using more background resources than the first one, which was 1080p. I adjusted the resolution in Windows to 1080p and got roughly 20% more frames, just like before. Watching a Linus video showed that many extra 4K monitors didn’t impact in-game FPS much, so whatever I’m experiencing might be unusual. I’m less worried about getting my second monitor back to 1440p and more focused on figuring out what’s wrong with my system overall. All drivers are up to date, GPU and CPU stats haven’t changed, and no specific window or game settings seem to help. I’m completely puzzled and hoping someone else has encountered a similar issue.
