Hi, I placed a temporary SSD in my laptop and everything is stored on the external hard drive from the original unit. I need to retrieve some files since I don’t intend to keep Windows 7 installed there for long—just a week at most. I’ve connected the external drive via USB and see the folder, but I can’t access it. I know about taking ownership to gain access, but I’m worried that reinstalling the HDD might reset my profile or settings. Is there another way to retrieve those files without affecting my profile or operating system?

You could include an admin account for the other HDD alongside the one with the data. Right-click on the user profile, go to Properties, Security, edit, and add. It may display some failed messages related to system files, but that’s unlikely. You should be able to transfer the data from the user profile afterward.

I connected it to my MacBook and downloaded the files I needed. I’m not sure when I’ll put the original drive back into my laptop, but I’m satisfied with my Windows 7 setup right now.
