Here’s a clearer version of your situation:

I own a Dell Precision 7510 laptop running an Intel Core i7-6820HQ processor, which is a quad-core chip at 2.7GHz. Recently, I encountered performance issues when using CPU-intensive programs. In the Task Manager, under the Performance tab, it displays only two cores being utilized, not the four available. This discrepancy is confusing. I also have HWinFO installed to monitor system settings, which confirms there are four logical CPUs. However, my monitors show only two of the four cores being used. I’m wondering why this happens and how to resolve it so I can fully leverage all four cores.

This situation came up after a major hardware problem around Christmas, which forced me to reformat my drive and reinstall Windows. I’m trying to understand if this is connected to that past issue.

The discussion has been transferred to the Troubelshooting area. Verify if the core is turned off in the BIOS settings, as this could be the reason.

It appears HT plus certain cores are turned off in the BIOS. Your HWinfo lists 4 logical cores, whereas your CPU should display 8 if correct. It seems the hardware monitoring tools always show the standard core arrangement regardless of BIOS adjustments, so they should reflect 8 threads even with some disabled in the BIOS settings.

It seems Hyper-Threading isn't active at all.

Open msconfig, navigate to startup, then to Windows 10, and adjust the advanced settings. Ensure the amount of cpus is unchecked.

The file from msconfig - boot - advanced boot options was reviewed. I've left it unchecked now. Planning to restart and check the BIOS settings. Appreciate the advice. Matt

Thanks for the feedback. The box in MSCONFIG wasn’t checked, and I reviewed the BIOS settings—there was an option to enable cores with radio buttons, which was set to 2. I also confirmed all options were selected. It seems hyperthreading wasn’t turned on either. A recent BIOS update might have caused these changes. Appreciate the assistance, everyone! Matt

I attribute the issues to the unstable BIOS, it remains unreliable. Does your BIOS version 7510 ever start and display a black screen when Windows begins?
