Hi everyone. Here's a weird one. I built a PC for my brother around 4 months ago. Everything seemed to work fine until this week, where it wouldn't power on. I had him do a power drain cycle, and it booted. But after shutting down again, it wouldn't power up again. To be clear, the PC just doesn't seem to respond to the power switch after a shutdown - there's no lights, fans spinning, anything. The specs are: MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk Ryzen 5 3600X 16GB AORUS 3200MHz DDR4 RAM (2x8GB) Galax RTX 2060 Super 8GB PNY CS2130 1TB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD 750W power supply After a clean shutdown in windows, the PC just doesn't respond to the power switch at all, even if I jumper it on the MB. I've tried updating the MSI drivers from their support site. Originally the BIOS was still version A00, so I updated it to A40 and that still didn't work. I the rolled back to A30 but still have the same issue. I've updated Windows to the latest version as of 28th Dec 2020, same issues. I did try replacing the power supply with another 650W one that I had on hand, but the same issue appears to happen with that power supply. I've tried removing all components, right down to removing and reseating the CPU, but that hasn't worked. The power supply appears to be OK - I have confirmed I can see voltage across pins on the 24pin connector after a shutdown. At the moment the only way I have been able to get the PC to boot is to unplug the power cable from the PSU, remove the CMOS battery or jumper the CMOS clear, hold the power button down for 10-15sec, then plugging in the power again and pressing the power button. I even tried by removing everything except the CPU and one RAM stick. I turned the power on and left it for a few seconds, then switched the PSU off for 5sec. Then switched the PSU back on, and the system wouldn't respond to the power switch again. I have a support ticket in with MSI, thinking that the issue is with the motherboard, but is there anything you guys/gals think that I'm missing? Thanks
From the sound of it, probably a motherboard issue. You did good opening a ticket with MSI. However, what you can try is disabling Fast Startup: Fast Startup causes all kinds of weird issues sometimes. Although this usually causes a device not to want to stay off rather than not turning on. Still, you can give it a try. Also in the BIOS try disabling all of the C-states and put the memory to the default JEDEC, which should be 2400MHz at 1.2V, just in case there isn't something going on with the motherboard not being able to train it.
Thanks for the update. I wasn’t able to follow up on those recommendations, but appreciate the advice. After some research, I found more results by changing the search term to "won't wake from sleep" instead of "won't power on after first boot." This also led me to try putting the PC to sleep rather than shutting it down. The RAM RGB lights still show activity while the system is asleep. In the BIOS, I enabled the option to wake via USB device (which was off by default). I confirmed that tapping a key would trigger a wake-up, but the power switch didn’t respond at all. I also ran CPUZ, Cinebench R23, and Heaven benchmarks for about 20 minutes each, and everything seemed stable. I haven’t tested memtest yet. MSI hasn’t responded beyond suggesting a reset and BIOS rollback to version A30—we’ll see how it goes.
I’ve noticed the same problem too—your power button is acting up sometimes while the rest of your device works normally. Have you tried any fixes yet?
