I just moved into a new home and began attending university. The building offers excellent internet connectivity. After checking the adapter settings in Windows Control Panel, the speed appears as 1gbps—perfect. When I run a speed test on speedtest.net, it shows around 100mbps, which is only slightly below that benchmark. I've also tried connecting directly from the modem to the PC and from the router to the PC, but results remain consistent. I'm using a Cat 6 cable and my motherboard is the MSI Z370-A Pro. It runs this network controller: http://bit.ly/2LKrIfX. Appreciate any assistance, as I really need it. Edited September 1, 2018 by Isak_Chamoun

It's likely they're restricting your internet speed to balance bandwidth usage across the network, unrelated to the negotiated connection rate between your device and the router.

I need to talk to the person who rents this place or one of the residents since it looks like they manage the IT side. It’s not a dorm—it’s a house the owner is letting four students use. Thanks!

It might be that the internet speed is just 100Mbps, and the restriction applies only to the plan the person is subscribing to.

It indicates a connection via 1gig Ethernet to the router. The actual internet bandwidth from your ISP could be much less than this figure. With only 50mbps available, your adapter settings might reflect the higher Ethernet rate. Verify the network sync speed in your modem interface to understand the ISP-synced speed. Also, confirm your current plan with the ISP and ensure it aligns with the service you’re receiving.

The adapter handles data rates as high as 1Gbps, yet the institution probably limits it to 100Mbps for students. That’s completely fine.
