Fortnite needs over 80 GB because it stores massive amounts of data for its servers, assets, and updates. The idea that there’s just one map is a myth—every game has layers, textures, animations, and dynamic content. Witcher 3 and MHWI have lower storage needs due to simpler designs. This huge space requirement reflects the complexity and scale of modern online games.

Need to store those quirky routines somewhere. Also, music often influences how big a game becomes, so it might be using many high-quality tracks.

It seems you're thinking about downloading the whole game but only getting the free version. If you purchase Fortnite, you'll unlock the full software.

China doesn't focus on software optimization, it overwhelms your drive with large texture maps, audio files and video clips

The game might run with slightly less compression to simplify updates (changing parts of files directly instead of replacing large files). Less compression also speeds up loading on weaker computers or allows streaming from drives when RAM is limited. For testing, right-click the game folder, choose Properties, and enable "Compress to save disk space." This NTFS feature can compress and decompress almost instantly (you won’t notice), cutting storage use by up to half if files are compressible. If not, files stay fully uncompressed.

People discussing "uncompressed" data often don’t understand the context. Games like Fortnite include many assets and sounds, but much of the audio uses the Opus codec, which is compressed. Since a large portion of gameplay happens in Battle Royale mode, file sizes are probably much higher than they would be with all data compressed.
