Hello everyone! I recently switched from my GTX 970 to an RTX 2080 without altering any other parts of my PC. I currently have a 4790K with the standard boost setting of 4.4 and an 8GB of 1600MHz HyperX Fury RAM. I’m only planning to use my computer for gaming on a 144Hz, 1440p display. Would I need to upgrade to the latest CPU or RAM? Do you think making this change would really improve my gaming experience? I’d love to hear your thoughts or any experiences you have. Thanks in advance if this isn’t the ideal spot for my question.

Switching to a newer CPU will significantly improve performance. Your current CPU is limiting your gameplay.

Hello! To extend your system's lifespan, start with at least 16GB of RAM. Make sure to overclock it to 1600MHz since the stock is 1333MHz. Also, consider boosting your i7 processor to around 4.6–4.8GHz if possible. If none of these options appeal to you or you prefer purchasing new parts, upgrading will be the way forward. Still, even with these changes, your setup may face some performance limits.

It seems the current setup works well, so adding another 8GB stick might not be necessary. The most practical path appears to be upgrading other components later. Regarding the i9 versus the 12core Threadripper, which offers better value? That depends on your specific needs and budget.

You can't match it to Thread Ripper. 3700x works fine. Or even 3600 is sufficient.

Your processor will start acting older, but that single memory slot is really limiting speed. You should aim for at least 16GB with dual-channel support. Adding another stick would significantly improve performance and let you maintain decent frame rates, though you’ll need to switch to DDR4 to reach around 144fps in most recent games.
