I recently acquired two iMacs from early 2008 featuring Core 2 Duos (E8435 and E8235). One unit appears nonfunctional despite a working CPU, while the other has a GPU problem requiring replacement or baking. I’m wondering if it’s possible to repurpose these CPUs, especially the E8435, since they’re essentially mobile processors. Can I locate a compatible motherboard?

But I’m unsure why you’d prefer these CPUs, especially since they’re not Mac-specific and still carry a significant price tag. They’re also quite sluggish, making it hard to see any real value. Better keep them as a fun piece of tech or something that works just fine in its own right.

In theory, it's possible—but the price is steep. Using old processors means spending a lot on components, which makes them expensive to operate compared to their value.

You might reuse the CPU if you locate a motherboard supporting a Core 2 Mobile CPU. There were a few of these in the past, but they're hard to find today. The top choice would be a refurbished laptop motherboard.
