How old are you? I've spent a lot of time on older 4X titles. Civ 3 stood out to me as the top in its line, while later games failed to match its charm. For a space-focused experience, Masters of Orion 2 is my pick. Even today, I revisit M.O.O.O. occasionally.

Have you checked archive.org recently? There are many games available, and you can play a large number of them using a dos emulator in a web browser.

For classic PC games, I suggest Deus Ex, Thief/Thief II, System Shock 2, and Half-Life.

I too, who once played PC games back in 1994, think the original System Shock is quite old-fashioned and hard to grasp. Still, I’m sure it’s worth trying if you’re interested.
