The title covers everything. I’m planning to buy a laptop for my son soon. I need something good enough for schoolwork and gaming too. (He’s 11 and plays all the games that 11-year-olds like—Fortnite, PVZ 2, etc.) I’m also trying to get on my wife discreetly, since my current computer is old (I7 4770k, GTX770).

My budget is about £6 or 700, and I’ve seen some decent used laptops, but there are also good new ones. Should I take a chance on something that might stop working quickly, or should I go for a brand new one with a warranty? I’m completely unsure about laptops and would really appreciate some clear advice.

The reliability of a second-hand item depends entirely on the source you choose to purchase it from. It could be excellent or disappointing. For every used system, you must start by performing a complete reset and reinstallation.

It's true. I was aiming to purchase from Scumtree, but the ideas of trustworthy sellers are clearly out of the question. I'm now considering buying new, though refurbished models from reputable places seem appealing. Thanks for your thoughts. Even so, my old machine was acquired from parts sold on Scumtree, making it a tricky situation.

Even this isn't certain.
A few years back, I purchased a small refurbished laptop of that type...a travel device. It functions flawlessly, and it's been working for three years now. The operating system is a scam.

I haven't found any new laptops in the £600-£700 range that offer a noticeable upgrade in graphics compared to your current desktop. For used options, the same caution applies. If you're considering pre-owned models, I'd suggest reaching out to someone you trust. Such deals are uncommon.

Even then...
Certain aspects remain hidden. Unless you dismantle the packaging of a new device from the supplier and perform a complete reset, it stays that way.
