XP performs adequately in games, though it slows down on newer systems and doesn’t support DirectX 11. I favor Windows 7 for gaming now, as it requires only about 65MB of VRAM (sometimes as little as 8MB) and on my upgraded rig it uses under 1GB RAM.

I encountered a problem despite having file transfers active and VM guest installation. The bidirectional transfers work, but sending from host to guest or guest to host isn't functioning when enabled.

You're among the fortunate ones who got XP 64-bit, provided your drivers are stable. It's really impressive!

When things got tricky, I followed your advice and set up a P3 rig for XP and earlier. It turned out to be much easier than dealing with a VM, and I was able to run my old DOS games from their floppy disks.
