I’m thinking about how to handle the sale of your wife’s 2012 11-inch MBA with the i5 processor, 4GB RAM, and 128GB SSD. The best option seems to be wiping it clean and resetting it to factory settings, which would securely erase all data. However, this might lock the device into whatever OS came with it—likely El Capitan right now. If you completely reset it, the buyer would probably need to upgrade to the latest version of macOS. It’s unclear if that version will work well with those specs and age, but I’m not sure. Could there be a safer way to keep it running as El Capitan while preserving your data? Let me know!

The best approach is to let the seller decide, though practically you’d prefer to move to the latest update for higher value. Yep

Apple Support - Steps Before Selling, Donating, or Trading In Your Mac When reinstalling MacOS via the recovery partition you can choose between the latest version, the newest available release, or the oldest one for your device. I’d usually reinstall the same El Capitan version. If the next owner decides to upgrade, it’s straightforward. Downgrading requires more effort.
