Third-gen i7s are still widely used and effective.
It doesn't hold up. Many games don't depend much on the CPU. The frame rate drops noticeably from 3400g to 3900x, reaching around 17fps in most modern titles on ultra at 4k resolution. A small increase in CPU speed won't justify the cost unless you're obsessed with cutting-edge performance and less concerned about real-world play. It's frustrating when people suggest upgrading just because a 3700x isn't used more than half the time during ultra gaming.
he has a point. the zen 3 architecture performs well. the 5800x or later 5700x match or surpasses the i7 10700k in most games, giving you around 20-30 frames per second. that’s significantly better than your "3-8". compared to the 3080, it’s not a huge gap, but it can still make a noticeable difference at lower resolutions. it’s definitely worth considering if you’re building a new system. still, i think waiting a bit would be smart. 3700x remains solid. after a year, consider upgrading to an am5 socket with those CPUs. your 3080 is quite capable and won’t limit your setup much, especially at higher resolutions. you’ll likely get plenty of FPS, so don’t stress too much.
If it's all about gaming, I'd upgrade the 3700x to a 5600x. When comparing the 5800x, it stands out as the least attractive value among the four CPUs. The whispers about a 5600 for 250 suggest the 5800x could be a really bad deal.
Same scenario for me too. I’m holding off on upgrades. Selling my 3700X at the same price I paid ($270) wouldn’t make it close to a 5800X. I’m using a 3080 FE with no major bottlenecks (except some FS2020 issues that aren’t fully resolved). I don’t want to downgrade to six cores either, and the 3700X is still a solid CPU. I’m planning to wait until AM5 comes out.
