They seem indifferent to alternative methods for opening windows beyond paying, since those options are readily available online. Their focus likely lies on commercial licenses, aiming to ensure widespread access to Windows for the tech activities they support.

I purchased Windows 10 Pro when it launched. The upgrade has kept my system genuine for 11 years now. Yesterday I reactivated my Windows 11 machine. It’s happened twice in those 11 years—still a bit of a hassle sometimes.

The safest option is to buy a Retail key from an authorized reseller or directly from Microsoft. This ensures the license wasn’t originally obtained through a stolen credit card and also maintains security across devices linked to a Microsoft account.

In the USA, reputable sellers such as Newegg, Amazon, Microcenter and others are safe options for purchasing software licenses. Keep in mind that OEM keys can’t be transferred between devices. This restriction often prevents the license from being valid if you modify the computer significantly. If these rules seem acceptable, go ahead and buy an OEM key. Otherwise, opt for a Retail key to ensure a permanent license linked to your Microsoft account.
