Oculus Rift
Oculus Rift
I'm weighing the choice between an Oculus Rift and upgrading my PC... or maybe doing both, since my RX 580 is okay but my E5 1607 v2 is quite old. I'm not sure if I'd even be able to play VR games. Just to clarify, do the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift provide similar experiences with the same games? Are there any console exclusives? I really want to try Minecraft VR, Skyrim VR, and Beat Saber. I'm leaning toward the Oculus because it's cheaper—about 200€ or less than the Vive.
The RX 580 performs adequately with only slight super sampling needed.
The CPU has some limitations; most VR titles built from scratch should work at standard settings, but CPU-heavy games could face challenges.
Oculus offers performance similar to a Vive, though the original Vive excels in large room tracking and accessories like tracking pucks and wireless options. The Rift feels more comfortable out of the box for both headset and touch controllers.
Oculus operates within a somewhat closed ecosystem. For games exclusive to Vive or other HMDs, you’ll need third-party apps such as ReVive, which isn’t fully compatible all the time.
A new version of the Rift is expected soon, but no official release date has been announced yet. Other headsets with superior displays, like the Samsung Odyssey+, also exist, each with their own advantages and drawbacks.
Minecraft supports an Oculus version or can be played via Vivecraft mod for Java versions.
Skyrim may pose issues depending on your CPU; you’d need to test it or consult someone with a comparable processor.
Beat Saber runs smoothly on most systems.
You can use the Steam VR checker tool to assess your system’s VR readiness before purchasing.
Thanks you very much!
About minecraft , the Vivecraft mod is only for the Vive right?
Theres a chance i might get the newer vive considering that im going to get it in summer so thats nice.
Gonna run the steam vr test
Edit
: The test was positive!...wait no , that doesnt sound right... My pc is capable of running VR! Thats really good news. Average quality 6.7 (high)
The Rift supports native play for all Oculus titles and generally works well with SteamVR games, though occasionally the developers don't fully map controller inputs for Touch, Vive wands, or WMR controllers, leading to inconsistent button layouts. This issue is uncommon among reputable developers but does occur occasionally. I've experienced it while playing Vivecraft on my Rift a few years ago and it was manageable.
For a typical Rift configuration you need several USB 3.0 ports—two for the cameras and one for the HMD. Adding another camera can be accommodated via USB 2.0 with 15-foot extenders. Some controllers don’t work well, so check the recommended PCIE cards on the manufacturer’s site. Many units are sold out, suggesting the Rift S is near release; if it uses inside-out tracking, it might only need a USB 3 port plus a video or VR link port. Official details from Oculus are still pending.
Sure, okay. That means I'm fine unless I have to get the PCIE USB card. I was just watching the Oculus Quest reveal and saw the price—it was exciting, but not for PCs. Then I saw someone mention the Rift S, which lifted my spirits. I think I'll check the launch price soon, and my hopes might drop again. A first wireless VR headset for beginners would be great, but I worry the price will be way over €400+. Thanks for the info!
