Hello, I recently acquired a used Lenovo T420 that’s experiencing some unusual sleep mode behavior. The issue manifests differently depending on the situation. Sometimes it powers off completely after just one second, while other times it enters sleep normally but then boots up in hibernation mode—this feature isn’t available in the settings menu. Occasionally it appears to enter a hibernation state and then resume operation, only to shut down again after an unknown period, sometimes taking two hours or more. The laptop remains connected to the desktop dock while I use it for light tasks like browsing and watching videos, ensuring it stays powered on. The battery seems relatively new; the previous owner reportedly replaced it, but it appears to be a counterfeit. These symptoms could vary with different Windows power plans (even if settings are identical) or remain consistent. I’ve tried various configurations—adjusted BIOS, enabled/disabled C states, modified CPU and power settings—but nothing seems to resolve the problem. I’ve even installed a custom BIOS (Oleh’s mod bios based on version 1.46) with advanced options, yet the behavior persists. Changing the “Powered USB” setting temporarily improves performance, but it only offers short-term relief before the issue returns. It’s frustrating, and I’m at my limit. Today is a good example: the laptop crashed after just a few hours of use, so I put it to sleep before going home. When I returned after eight hours, it came back online from standby. If anyone has insights or solutions, I’d really appreciate your help—whether it’s technical advice or something more unusual.

No one can assist you here. The issue resolved itself after reinstalling Windows, but it returned to its previous state.

I adjusted the USB configuration to "charge with always on USB port" and it functioned properly again. After removing the newest Windows update, the issue persisted.

So... no assistance from the forum? I also face some unexpected problems, such as a sudden drop in performance even though CPU usage seems normal. Sometimes the CPU stays stuck at around 30% below 1GHz, won’t change much, and it wakes up again after being put to sleep. Other times I have to restart the system, and there are cases where I remove the battery and unplug the laptop briefly.
