Constructed a PC in July of last year and experience occasional freezes. The entire system would freeze, requiring a hard reset by pressing the power button to restart. This has occurred three times recently, not often but noticeable. It seems the issue isn't tied to gameplay—OS versions range from Windows 8.1 to Vista. I'm unsure where to start troubleshooting since it's rare and no clear cause appears. Could anyone have encountered a similar situation? Details include: OS types (Windows 8.1, 8, 7, Vista), architecture (x64/x86), hardware specs (AMD Ryzen 7 5700G, Radeon RX 6700 XT, MSI B550-A), power supply, cooling setup, and recent changes like driver updates or overclocking. I'm a desktop user with an air-cooled build, no overheating concerns during games, and haven't changed the OS recently.
Seems like the GPU is showing poor artifacts—possibly a dead card. I own that model in your Adrenalin tuning guide; try configuring it at 2324MHz minimum, 2424mhz maximum, 1150mV, and 2012mhz VRAM clock. What are your temperatures? Use HWMonitor to monitor GPU temps during stress tests or while playing demanding games.
Also, verify cables using a reliable or alternate one. Windows tends to operate in desktop mode with built-in graphics such as the 5700G, which might explain its absence in games. (If turned on) What are the present memory rates? Speeds above 3200 Mhz could potentially lead to issues, so adjusting them might be a good idea.
I've adjusted those configurations and am checking the outcome. It's annoying having to wait days or weeks before noticing any improvement. The temperature data before and after the underclocking are provided. It runs a bit warm, but it seems within the supported limits. Unfortunately, I don't have any backup cables. The integrated graphics are turned off, though I think switching to onboard graphics for testing might be better. I'll give that a shot next. The memory is set to 3600, which matches my RAM specifications. That's something I can experiment with. One adjustment at a time seems like the most practical approach. Appreciate your help!
If you purchased the GPU recently, return it to RMA. Remove the GPU a few times, then reinsert it. It might be due to improper contact in the slot or a faulty HDMI cable. I just bought new cables for my TVs, PS5, and computers, but I still experienced screen flickering until I replaced the cables!
Good luck! Your 6700 XT (brand different) had been factory overclocked, reaching a high temperature of around 95°C and experiencing crashes. Lowering the clock speeds and adjusting the voltage resolved the overheating and instability issues.
Replacing the GPU and using a different HDMI cable didn’t resolve the issue. Crashes persist, and I experienced another lock-up identical to the one shown in my original post. It only occurs when I’m not playing a game, which seems unusual. I’ve removed the GPU entirely and switched to the built-in graphics from my AMD Ryzen 7 5700G CPU. I’m now doing a final test before considering an RMA.
