Operating my 9700k at 5.2ghz with turbo llc on the Z390 Aorus Ultra is working well. Under heavy load it draws about 180w, and Cinebench R23 stays stable. VRM voltage sits between 1.31v and 1.32v during load. The hottest core reaches around 97°C. I’m considering a repaste since my old thermal paste from a friend’s cooler master air cooler lasted only a few years. I’m eyeing the SYY 157, which is just $5 on Amazon right now. Which other thermal pastes perform better? I need something durable for GPUs as well.

Thermal paste works well in various situations; no specific type is necessary. The brand doesn't matter much as long as it's a decent quality product. As long as you spend a bit more than the basic range, you should be okay.

The main difference between common thermal paste and the high-quality ones is a small temperature gap. You're looking for something that lasts a long time, so pastes like Noctua NTH2 or Arctic MX4 are solid choices with durability. MX4 often lasts around eight years.

This will likely boost performance the most. You could achieve this by disassembling a basic shaving tool, applying liquid metal, or using premium thermal paste such as Gelid GC Extreme or NT H2.

Absolutely, putting in extra work for a soldered CPU is worthwhile. If you're willing to go that far, maybe try skipping the die and lid. Just avoid using a mono block—better to let it overheat, which still functions. Or lower the voltage if possible.

I run thermal grizzly kryonaut. Cuzgrizzlies are awesome. 180 watts at 9700k? That’s wild. What about my 9900k?

Soldered chips are tough to tackle, so don’t waste time on that. Thermal grizzly is solid work—liquid metal on top of the IHS is something I’ve done on GPUs before; it took about 5 cents. Delid cut 25 cents off and added another 5 cents with a metal layer between the IHS and the cooler.
