Obtaining extremely high temperatures using 5800x3D.
I recently upgraded my setup to a 5800x3D with a 280mm Arctic freezer 2, and I understand the temperatures are higher with this CPU. I’m curious if the performance I’m experiencing is typical. During a R23 multi-core benchmark, my maximum temperature reached 90°C after 5 seconds. The chip stays around 50°C. HWInfo doesn’t display thermal throttling, but I’m wondering if there’s a method to lower these readings. While playing Warzone 2, temperatures are about 79°C at 110fps with high graphics settings at 1080p. In Elden Ring, my temps stay in the low 70s. I’ve tried reseating the chip and applying new thermal paste. I’ve also adjusted the fan curves in BIOS to attempt lower temps instead of higher ones. The room temperature is 19°C. Thank you.
It looks quite high, that's understandable. Try adjusting it again, apply more paste, avoid over-tightening to prevent bending the PCB and damaging the CPU connection. Ensure all four screws are equally tight. For comparison, I usually experience temperatures between 60°C to mid-70s during Warzone2 at 160FPS with spikes in the mid-70s. I haven't tested R23 yet, but R20 keeps me around 80°C. With PBO2 CO and a -15 offset, it drops to about 8-10°C while achieving higher clocks more often. My idle temps are around 30°C. Using the Liquid Freezer II 360mm should perform similarly to the 280mm model. I don't know your case model, but it can significantly impact temperatures. I'm using a LianLi O11XL with side 3 fan intake, bottom 3 fan intake, rear 1 fan exhaust, and three fan top LF II radiator exhausts.
Hmmm something is off if we are talking about the Liquid Freezer II 280mm. The chip sure is hot, but in idle mine keeps ~33°C and in R23 get about 83°C on the 10 minute benchmark and that's with EVGA CLC 280mm... a cooler that hasn't won " The European Award For The Best CPU Cooler (Water) ". Check if you radiator is mounted properly - tubes of the radiator should be at the bottom and the pump on the CPU should be lower than the top part of the radiator. If this is an air cooler with 2x140mm fans, then it's completely normal. Even with NH-U14S it still managed to hit the same temps under load in R23 and was constantly above 45°C idle.
Use a thumbscrew for securing it without any tool—just rely on your fingers and note the initial resistance. Once everything is evenly tightened, stop further adjustments. Also, what adhesive are you applying? Noctua's NT-H2, Arctic's MX-5 and Thermal Grizzly are highly recommended—they provide significant cooling performance.
I’m applying Arctic’s MX-5 paste, tightening everything firmly and adding a bit more pressure with a screwdriver. Later this evening I’ll take a closer look at the PCB to check for any damage, even though I don’t think they were that snug.
