Obtaining a fresh MB and reinstalling the OS?
Do you really have to reinstall the operating system? Is there an alternative way to get your PC working without it? I have a lot of games, but I’m not sure how to extract the registry entries for them since some are missing. I’m planning to upgrade from a Gigabyte X58A-UD3R Rev2.0 to an MSI Z97 Gaming 5, running Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. Will it be the same OS after the upgrade?
Wait, upgrading the motherboard doesn't mean you have to reinstall Windows.
Occasionally changing chipsets is necessary, like when I upgraded from AM3 to LGA 1150 and had to reinstall my operating system.
It's a 50/50 chance it'll work. Various models have different strictness levels. Most common reason is clearing out all unnecessary software that has accumulated. Before swapping drives, remove all chipset, audio, and LAN drivers. Also consider turning off Windows temporarily since you'll need to turn it back on afterward.
