I built a fresh PC and am selling my old one soon. I prefer keeping my Windows credentials linked to my account so that when I log in to a new machine it activates automatically without me. In the past, changing hardware sometimes broke this connection, leaving me without access. Now I need the key tied to the actual device, not just my account. If I hand over the PC, I want it to stay associated with the hardware or its original owner after a reset. I also don’t want losing any keys beyond this one if someone upgrades and takes mine. Should I simply log out and wipe all accounts, or is there another step I need to take?

It seems there isn’t a reliable method left to achieve this. You might be able to access the PC, turn on Windows, and then log out, keeping the key available until you actively use it again. I haven’t tried this before.

I can help set up a local account for that device and then convert it into an MS account. This process might allow the key to transfer to his Microsoft account. You could reach out to Microsoft Support or post on their support forum to explore options.

It could potentially help. I scoured numerous forums and conducted extensive searches online before sharing this. All the results I found were about transferring licenses between computers. Nothing relevant appeared about my problem. Posting here or contacting Microsoft directly might be the way forward. Great suggestion!
