Observed First-Person Shooter Performance Issue - Powerful Overclock, Minimal Temperature / Load
Hello,
I’m using a 2080 graphics card and an i7-8700k processor overclocked to 5GHz, with 16GB of DDR4 RAM at 2400MHz. I’m playing on a 2K 144Hz monitor, so the frame rate figures I’m presenting are at 1440p resolution (OBS uses a 1440p display area, then downscales it to 720p). For instance, in Fortnite, without OBS running, I can achieve approximately 500 frames per second. However, when OBS is open, my frame rate tends to average around 380 frames per second. (Using GPU encoding) My CPU and GPU usage are typically around 60% / 30%, with temperatures remaining in the low 60s.
The issue I'm experiencing is that the game runs very smoothly when OBS isn’t running. However, as soon as I open OBS, even though the frame rate remains high, I consistently experience minor stuttering within the game, as if it were running at a 60 frames per second rate – although not severely noticeable. If I enable VSync, the frame rate drops significantly, but the game runs smoothly like it does when OBS is not running. The downside is that with VSync active, my frame rates frequently fall below 100, which makes the game feel sluggish in demanding scenes.
Therefore, does anyone have any suggestions about why OBS is causing this noticeable microstutter, despite my CPU and GPU usage remaining relatively low, and my temperatures being within acceptable limits, with frame rates consistently exceeding 200?
Thanks!
