My Windows 11 desktop is showing unusual scrolling and cursor movements. The pointer frequently returns to the top of the page or the start of a sentence while scrolling through websites, typing, or using documents. I checked for updated drivers on my mouse and installed a new one without success. I performed a system restore to revert to a previous version but it didn’t resolve the problem. A full virus scan was run, and I booted into safe mode, yet the issue continued. Even in File Explorer, I can’t select any file except the first one in a folder. Now I’m unable to complete any work on my desktop. I would appreciate advice on how to fix this.

Run msconfig and disable loading startup items.
Select "Selective Startup," uncheck "Load Startup Items," then click Apply and OK. Restart the system and verify.

The process of restarting without the start-up items appears to be effective. To identify problematic items, you may need to test each one individually. You can proceed without them loading if needed.

It's best to focus on identifying the cause, as there are startup components that you or your system might need to load. You can try booting normally and navigate to Settings>Apps>Startup. You may want to switch on startup items to test. Please take a screenshot and share it via imgur.com.

I visited Apps/Startup. The initial nine applications are all disabled. I can't scroll down to view the remaining ones.

It could be a faulty battery or a problem with the mouse driver, possibly due to dust. Try disassembling and cleaning it.

Nothing appears to resolve the issue. Turning off all startup applications didn't make a difference. Using a wireless mouse didn't solve the problem either; the scrolling persisted. Occasionally things work smoothly, but then suddenly the scrolling becomes uncontrollable, causing everything to jump back to the top without any control.

I mentioned that the wireless mouse functions properly. The wired version seems to be the source of the problem. Have you tested different USB ports, the front case ports, and the rear motherboard ports? It might be an issue related to the hard-wired connection. ??
