I'm using four SATA drives and one NVMe drive simultaneously outside the motherboard. Be aware that certain boards may block some SATA ports when the NVMe drive is connected.

For instance, having both a SATA port and an NVMe port used together won't cause compatibility problems.

Ensure your SATA ports remain active for the NVMe drive installation (when applicable). If the SATA drive fails, relocate the SATA cable to another port.

Motherboards generally feature one or two M.2 slots designed for PCIE/NVME storage. Certain boards may disable specific SATA connections when an M.2 device is connected, while others allow both types to coexist. Typically, there are six SATA ports available, though some may be disabled depending on the model. You can indeed run NVME drives alongside SATA drives on a board, but the exact configuration varies by model.
