Attempted to start Steam using the driver in the title, but encountered complaints about performance issues and Steam failing to launch. Works smoothly at speeds below 418.56 but runs very slowly in GTA. Looking for ways to modify or bypass the error.

It's really why I stopped using Steam on Linux—it's so complicated to keep everything running smoothly. For any assistance from those who still believe, you'll have to clearly mention your distribution and the driver installation process.

Ubuntu 16.04 P106 GPU on Prime with Coffee Lake. NVIDIA drivers from a PPA. Version 430 is the latest in that channel. Versions 384-418 work fine for Steam, but only 430 causes problems.

It's mainly the single driver setup that works well. Changing to more drivers can really help. I require various drivers for different Proton titles. Is that all the information you have? @Alex Atkin UK

If the new driver was developed for Ubuntu 19.10+ and then updated, it might not include 32-bit libraries for Ubuntu. The system is phasing out 32-bit support and halting the release of older libraries, so you can still use them until they stop working. If NVIDIA adopts this path, it could create a major problem for users relying on those libraries. http://www.linuxandubuntu.com/home/steam...tu-support If NVIDIA hasn't removed 32-bit support yet, it falls to your package maintainer to resolve it. Otherwise, you might need to use NVIDIA's installation tool https://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx This is one of the reasons I suggest AMD cards and rolling distributions.

Attempt to install the 32-bit drivers using sudo apt install libvulkan1 libvulkan1:i386. If successful, also install the 430 Nvidia drivers libnvidia-gl-430:i386. Try reinstalling from the driver manager if the problem remains. It's recommended to use the ppa:graphics-drivers repository.

I’m okay with gaming on Windows—it’s not too much of a hassle—but it helps to have Steam running smoothly to redeem codes and the like. What bothers me is I need to keep the card active on Linux since the Intel iGPU makes the picture much softer and text look blurry compared to what I’m used to. I think it’s probably because of how Intel handles compositing with lower scaling, even for static text at my native monitor resolution. Maybe they should have released a 64-bit Steam client? Even if it can’t start 32-bit games, it would still be useful for other purposes you might have.

there might be alternatives to copy the free resources from the 418 drivers if the command doesn't work. dxvk games should function properly unless they're tied to Steam's gl free library and interfering with launch. You've also heard similar concerns, though only some 32-bit libraries were being considered for removal.

The OpenGL 32-bit libraries aren't installed correctly. The second command you're using isn't working as expected. Even VirtualBox reports issues with the NVIDIA driver, but not with the IGPU. You need to ensure the correct setup for both drivers.
