Hi everyone,
I believe many gamers around the world have likely come across information about Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, or CSGO as it is more often called. This game continues to set records even after over ten years. Recently, it seems that the newest drivers for NVIDIA GPUs contain a hidden reference inside the ‘Game Profiles’ of the update code, mentioning terms like ‘CSGOS2’ and ‘CS2’. This might hint at an upcoming upgrade that could move CSGO onto Source 2, Valve’s latest engine. Still, be cautious with this information, as nothing official has been confirmed yet.

A recent discussion on Reddit suggests that NVIDIA drivers now include a profile for CS:GO2, fueling rumors about a potential new installment. However, most would dismiss such claims, pointing out that leaks have happened before without official confirmation.

The name ‘CSGOS2’ could simply mean ‘CSGO Source 2’, but the mix-up with ‘Counter-strike 2’ made some fans think a sequel was near. While it might seem unlikely, the main point is that Source 2 hasn’t been released for CS:GO in a long time. The game still enjoys strong popularity and a solid esports presence, making Valve hesitant to invest in a new engine. Developing a fresh one would be costly and time-consuming.

Other games like Dota 2 are already on Source 2, yet CSGO remains there despite being nearly two decades old. Recently, the game set a record on Steam with over 1.3 million concurrent players. As one of the top esports titles, CSGO carries significant importance for the industry.

Source modder Gabe Follower noted that the ‘csgos2’ option now shows up in most NVIDIA drivers, but this isn’t definitive proof of an upcoming release. He believes it’s probably the rumored remaster of CS in Source 2, which would likely bring only minor improvements. Still, the new executable and game profile are genuine clues.

Many quickly assumed that upgrading CSGO to Source 2 would mean a quick launch, but Valve probably plans to release it as a beta first. This would allow testing and feedback before a full rollout.

We’ll have to monitor the situation in the coming weeks or months to see if this long-standing game gets a meaningful update.

Some slight update:
PCGamer actually had a peek at the driver data using
Nvidia Profile Inspector
and the author can confirm that the csgos2.exe profile is indeed there. So there is some ray of hope.
Nvidia driver's 'csgos2.exe' reference reinvigorates CS:GO update speculation | PC Gamer
Also, Gabe Follower actually tried tricking Geforce Experience/GFE to think it's CSGO 2. From the looks of the config it seems to be a fallback and calls the steam protocol regardless which it found, one user Tweeted:
