The exclusive drivers from NVIDIA really grab my attention. Every desktop setup I pick up causes the screen to flicker or the compositing feels slow, and recording with OBS can become unstable and choppy sometimes. However, on my Linux laptop paired with an Intel integrated GPU, things run much more smoothly compared to my gaming PC. It shouldn’t be this way since the card on my desktop is significantly stronger than the built-in graphics in my laptop. Gaming is fine, but I hope my desktop and OBS recording perform better with the GTX 660 in this system. Is there any way to improve the experience so it’s less frustrating?

I plan to upgrade this system soon; it’s already six years old and will require a refresh starting in 2020 and onward. Even if I wanted to switch back to Windows, the AMD card would still fit well in the next build. I don’t mind their new tech, though that’s just my take.

You performed the action correctly, but it slows things down.

It might be due to an outdated GPU, which can cause compatibility issues with newer drivers and software.

A solid driver version would focus on stability, responsiveness, and ease of use. It should offer clear feedback, smooth handling, and reliable performance across different conditions.

Execute `lsmod | grep nouveau` to check if it's active. Its presence may indicate the cause of the performance drop. Even after manually updating the NVIDIA drivers, it often reappears—typically a system refresh will resolve the issue.

I'm using my 650ti with the latest drivers. Consider an AMD card for Linux or hold off on Intel's dGPU.
