Nvidia drivers fail to set up following a Windows 10 update because of a crash (resolved)
While playing games my PC stopped working without a clear BSOD and I couldn't get back into Windows. After several attempts to fix things, I chose to reinstall Windows because I didn’t want to lose any important files. The main issue is that I can’t install NVIDIA drivers while the system crashes during installation. I tried reinstalling Windows multiple times, checked my RAM (replaced it, tested with one stick at a time in different slots), swapped out the motherboard (everyone said it was the board and I intended to upgrade), installed Windows on another SSD (both Samsung models: 970 EVO Plus 500GB and 970 EVO 1TB), changed GPUs three times (Galax RTX 2070 Super, GTX 1050, GT730), stress-tested the CPU (no errors, temperatures stayed normal, no throttling), and everything worked fine on my old system with a 10+ year-old setup. I could even run NVIDIA drivers and play games without issues. When testing the GPU in my old PC using my current PSU (Antec 650W) it worked perfectly. The only consistent part was the CPU, RAM (tested in various configurations), and drives. Kinda strange though—I used only Samsung M.2 drives since I had no other storage, but they all ran smoothly with the latest firmware. Update: I’m not sure if this matters, but Device Manager lists my GPU as "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" instead of "RTX 2070 Super," and the PC restarted while I was typing. I reinstalled the RTX 2070 Super into the system, opened Device Manager and left it alone! Edit: Sorry, I missed some specs :3 My system has a Ryzen 7 3700X + Wraith Prism cooler (original), ASUS TUF Gaming B550 PRO (that feels odd), Galax RTX 2070 Super (used for GTX 1050 and GT730 testing), Samsung 970 EVO & 970 EVO Plus with two 8GB 3200MHz RAM modules. I updated Windows to a fresh install. I took my PC to a repair shop, and they said the CPU was faulty—even though my PC hasn’t stopped working yet, I don’t trust them completely. I’m confused about why it failed in this way. If anyone knows, please reply since this is unusual. Edited July 25, 2024 by NixiType added info.**
I confirmed the 2070 functions in the older setup. Could you try another GPU on your updated system?
I mentioned in the forum post that I attempted to install NVIDIA drivers for the RTX 2070 Super, GTX 1050, and GT730. All of them encountered the same problem—during driver installation the screen would go black and the PC would restart, preventing it from booting back into Windows.
If the screen goes black and displays BSOD, navigate to C:\Windows\Minidump and verify your presence of any minidump files. If available, return to the Windows directory and transfer the Minidump folder to the Downloads folder (use the desktop if needed). Compress the copied folder and include it in a post. Please adhere strictly to the instructions since Windows discourages file manipulation there.
Thanks for the idea. I should be able to handle this once I rest and get some sleep.
It seems there was a technical glitch, as noted in the revised update. Could you clarify the nature of the issue? I haven’t encountered something this precisely before.
